i have a 96 gsr as you could have guessed. we just installed the full aem intake on it. i fully expected to hear my vtec kick in at about 5,600 or 6,000 rpm. i heard it at about5,000 where is first starts, but at 5,600 and 6,000 i heard no difference in noise. does this mean i need to replace my vtec solenoid? my friend has a 98 gsr with a matrix short ram intake and you can hear his very clearly. maybe it is just a difference in the years? i dont know, any help would be great.

Not sure but what you are actually hearing is the secondary runners kicking in and not the VTEC. You really shouldnt be able to hear the VTEC kick in because it is made to be a fairly smooth process.

A CAI won't change the point at which VTEC engages.

thats i-vtec. vtec on an a dohc engine is quite distinct. if you cant feel it, then there is something wrong.

i know it wont change the point at which it engages, but it should change the volume at which you hear it when it does engage.

just to let you know we have had a huge discussion on WHEN VTEC OPENS.......
the answer? 4400 on a stock 94-01 integra gsr

that noise that you hear at 5700 is the secondary butterflies in teh inatake manfiold allowing more air to flow into the head,

so does that mean there is nothing i should check out, and if not, why are most of the other integra vtec's i hear loud at one point, and mine is not?

if you are that concerned, take it to the dealership and ask them to see if anything is wrong.

if ur vtec selenoid was not functioning, your check engine light would be on.

Make a VTEC indicator light like I did. It cost about 5 bucks and only takes an hour or two. This would tell you if it's working or not and if not, when you get it fixed its cool to have.

PM me if you want to do it, I can talk you through it if you don't understand my shitty directions.

You talked about being able to hear Vtec on your friends car as well as others but not yours. Is it possible that your friend has a DC Sports Hedder? I know that the DC makes a huge growl sound that amplifies the sound your car makes when Vtec is engaged and perhaps that's what you are hearing.

GS-Raw, my buddy does not have headers. he has a short ram intake and an exhasut, both made by matrix. and the other car is an accord with an exhaust and an iceman intake. and i can hear it on both of theres. thanks for the idea of the vtec light though, may try that.

You know what then, I think it may be because your friend has a short ram. I know that my CAI on my GSR is quiet as hell yet the short ram on my boy's Accord is loud as hell. Why don't you try swapping intakes with your friend for a day and I bet it will be louder.

not to bash but 4400 is when the vtec kicks in on a 94-01 gsr??? you smoking crack??? ON A STOCK GSR VTEC KICKS IN AT 6000....do not believe me??? take a ride in BOTH of my friends gsr's...one a stock 94 the other a stock 01....now the 4400-4700 sound you are hearing is your exhaust....you want proof?? disconnect your speedo cable...this will disengage your vtec and also give you a check engine light...then go take your car for a drive and at 4400-4700 you will hear that sound that almost sounds like vtec...THATS YOUR INTAKE  the only reason i may seem like a dick is because some people try and tell me it kicks in all the way down at 4400...thats rediculous....

No, actually i think you are smoking crack. I have a 96 gsr and vtec kicks in at 4500rpms.

Integra GS-R

VTEC: 4,400

The "aggressive vtec sound" you hear at 5,800-6,000 RPM is the sound of the butterfly valves in the GS-R intake manifold opening.

So, in conclusion: Theoverachiever is correct, phattycrx IS smoking crack
