in japanese there are 2 sets of well technically 3 sets of characters.

hiragana, katakana and kanji. the kanji are primarily the characters that have whole meanings instead of just sounds. and are the more elaborate ones to write out.

basically japanese is broken up into sounds instead of individual letters.

i find speaking it hard as fuck just because there are words that if you say one way mean one thing and then another if you say it another way. or maybe thats chinese i forget.

either way i think im gonna really try to learn japanese one of these days since i know the basics of the language.

Writing Kanji on a computer is easy. You write it out phonetically and pick the right one. I've been here for over a year and I know about 500 of them. To be somewhat literate you need to know at least 2000.

i guess but in japanese each character has a sound instead of putting letters together and forming sounds.

na ni nu ne no

ka ki ku ke ko

sa shi su se so....etc.

like cat is ne-ko meaning its "spelled" w/ the 2 characters. only if its in romanized characters would it look like english/romance languages. dont know if i made it clear
