Thieves in Delray targeting racing-style seats from Honda S2000s

Delray Beach -- The "performance jewel" of the Honda lineup has been the bane of at least three people who have had their cars' seats stolen in the past month, police reports show.

The sleek, racing-style seats of the Honda S2000 are hot commodities because they are interchangeable with other Honda models such as the Civic or Acura Integra, police said.

It is unclear if the cases are connected or where the stolen seats are being sold or traded, police said, adding that thieves tend to go for convertibles because their tops can be slashed without setting off an alarm.

Thieves have been brazen during thefts at two dealerships and a gated community parking lot, all within a mile's radius around the 3000 block of South Federal Highway.

Six seats from three S2000 models at the Rick Case Honda dealership in Davie also were stolen recently, manager Alex Pou said.

The latest victim in Delray Beach was mortgage broker Jason Cacciatore, 28, who parked his 2006 model under the lights and went to sleep about 11 p.m. Sunday, he said. By 10 a.m. Monday, Cacciatore discovered his roof slashed and his seats -- at about $3,500 each -- missing.

"I'm going to be back there again soon and I have no prevention unless I get a garage for $125 a month 100 yards away," Cacciatore said. "If you think about South Florida, there's a large cult following taking Civics and souping them up as a high-performance vehicle."

With damaged lights from Hurricane Wilma, Presidential Auto Leasing and Sales' S2000 was a sitting duck. On the night of Jan. 11, thieves slit the cover and stole the seats, estimated at $2,500 wholesale, company president Jim Guistolisi said.

Lacking identification numbers, the seats are difficult or impossible to trace, police and Honda spokeswoman Sara Pines said.

The seats aren't that easy to remove because they're attached in multiple positions to the base track, Pines said. Honda was unaware of any problems of seat theft to the S2000, a model that debuted in 2000 as a "throwback to our racing heritage," she added.

Honda doesn't recommend interchanging seats, Pines said, because they are made specifically for a model of car and its airbag sensors. Pines said a hard top may be a good idea for those who feel they are in high-risk areas. But don't tell that to Richard Laliberte.

Laliberte, 55, of Boca Raton, brought his hard-top 2000 model to Sherwood Honda to have its clutch repaired Jan. 7. It was left in the service center and by Jan. 9, workers discovered the seats were missing, Laliberte said, adding that the doors may have been left unlocked. Overall, Laliberte said he is frustrated that Honda has no way to track the seats.

"It's like stealing a pack of Twinkies," he said. "Just because you have a pack of Twinkies in your possession doesn't mean you stole them."

buy some of these........

They are nice seats, but they will NOT bolt right up into SC300/400, but they look great in some other cars
