How is the Phenom II's? Buddy of mine upgraded to that same one and said it made a huge difference over his socket939. Plus they are really cheap compared with intel.

it's great. a real great upgrade from any dual core system, and it is on par with my dad's Q9550, which cost almost $100 more at the time. and it easely overclocks to 3.5Ghz without doing anything else since the multiplier is unlocked.

speaking in benchmarks, it upped my 3DMark06 score from 10700 to 14400 from my Athlon 5000+ @ 3.0Ghz. and wPrime went down from 28 sec to only 10 sec in the 2M measure (if you are into that stuff).

video encoding is almost twice as fast, and CPU heavy games play much smoother, such as GTA 4 and Crysis.

^ugh, i would have sold you one of my HD4870's for $99 if you'd waited a bit longer. you ppl are so impatient!

i really hope you're considering the adoption of Windows 7 with that rig... OS is great with the more powerful hardware. how do you like the 23" screen? i have a similar model and now i could never use anything smaller... got greedy

my next upgrade is still a long way off... aside from the new HD5800 series graphics cards. srsly i have two perfect HD4870's that i'm gonna need to pawn off. oh yea and if you decide to overclock i could probably be of assistance with that... even though that quad is plenty of power already.

Shit! I bought the 4870 with the zalman cooler for 80 bucks. and the dude gave me the extra zalman vf1000 he had as well that he wasnt using. I WIN!

also, i do plan on going with Windows 7. I am currently running 32bit vista and it runs fairly smooth.

as for the monitor, its great. I went from a regular 17inch LCD that had a huge scratch in it to this thing. Its soo nice, the colors are vivid and very warm. Playing video games at 1920x1080 is awesome.

i would def look into upgrading to a 64-bit os or else that 8GB of ram is a total waste. 32bit vista can only use 4GB of that so it's like an additional 4GB for nothing. and that's cool that you got such a good deal on the 4870, they are awesome cards for HD gaming. i might actually have to hold on to my cards for now anyways until i upgrade...

o man, i always thought 32bit vista was able to use the 8gigs, thats the only reason Im running a 32bit platform.

Aside from that, I do plan to xfire this card with another. I just got to find my xfire bridge before I do so. If you decide to part ways with one of your 4870s, let me know. For a good price Im always game for an upgrade. I want to put this Antec PSU to good use.

i will def make sure to let you know if i want to sell one of my cards. like i said, since the upgrade to a 5870 is impossible atm, i might have to wait... but that doesn't mean selling them is out of the question. i think you can also use a HD4890 coupled with the 4870, even the 1GB if it's the primary adapter. i haven't tried two different cards in a CF configuration but it's supposed to work.

and as for the os... there are plenty of 64-bit vista torrents floating around, but i would just download windows 7 personally. you will notice a significant increase in performance using all of your ram in 64-bit apps and when running games.

Apparently I never added my system but it doesn't matter, hasn't really changed since 07 Minor upgrades here and there.

    Aerocool AeroEngineII Case
    Antec SmartPower 500w PSU
    Athlon 64 x2 Winsor 3800+ 65w AM2 @ 2ghz OC'd 2.2ghz
    OCZ Platinum DDR2-800 4gbz (originally OCZ Gold1gb)
    ABIT KN9 Ultra nForce4 mobo
    WDC 160gb SATA3 Main + 500gb Seagate
SATA3 DVD Burner (originally dual IDE DVD Burners)
BFG 9800gtx+ OC (originally eVGA 7600gt)
Windows Vista 64bit (Waiting for my Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit)

I really want to build a new Phenom system but funding is a bit short. I'm going to probably just upgrade the CPU for ~$70 or so and get up to the 3ghz land. If DDR3 prices keep dropping though, next year might have a new system in store for me.

I read up on the xfiring unmatched video cards just recently. the gains are noticeable they say and quite unexpected, however, I just cant bring myself to buy a 4890. Those things seem like OCd 4870s.

I had Windows 7 on my rig not too long ago. I took it off because i was like, fuck this RC shit. Ill be browsing for a copy though. Ill let you know how it goes.

RC was a mind rape for me too. It sucked worse than Vista.

whats wrong with running the RC?? ive run it fine, with many different programs and it always runs solid.

My setup is a prebuilt HP with some changes.
crappy asus M2N68 motherboard, nothing special.
    Athlon 64x2 4400+ 2.3mhz
    3 gigs 800mhz ddr2 ram
    360gb seagate barracuda 7200rpm
    coolermaster cpu cooler (aftermarket)
    600watt coolermaster psu
xfx geforce gts 250 video card
    20" widescreen hp lcd 1680x1050
logitec 5.1 surround with mini sub.
    logitec wireless mouse and keyboard
Running win 7 RC, and love it

  25. #150

well, the RC can't be looked at as a final product of course; i'm actually quite surprised that some of you guys didn't like it. there's no doubt in my mind that Win7 is superior to Vista however

as for the video cards... the 4890 basically is just an overclocked 4870, and since a lot of the 4870's have some decent overclocking headroom (especially when you flash the TOP bios) you're better off going that route anyways. if you get the 1GB version of either card you will notice a big difference when running higher resolutions, but both cards have 800 stream processors so they are still very close in the performance dept.

not sure if i ever posted my full specs, so why not + i don't wanna ruin the trend here

    ASUS Rampage Formula
    Intel Q6600 @ 3.2Ghz
    Swiftech H20-120 liquid cooling
    4GB G.Skill DDR2 memory
    VisionTek Radeon HD4870-512MB in CF
    X-Fi titanium Fatal1ty
    Ultra X3 1000w modular PSU
    Ultra eTorque mid atx case
    Acer 23" X233H 1080p monitor w/ HDMI
    Logitech speakers, keyboard and mouse
    Win XP / Win 7 RC (x64) / Ubuntu (x64)
