Want to start investing

So I got a small "bonus" cheque today of roughly 1000$, nothing major but while deciding on which electronic I was going to blow this cheque on I thought to myself that I should try investing. Now I know it's not alot to start with, but its some disposable income that I can afford to lose if I do lose it.

I was just wondering where I should start. I made a thread while back but nothing really ever came of it (things come up, you need money) that's how it goes.

Anyway, any pointers would be great, like which site to use takes the least fees per trade, upcoming things I need to watch for, basically trading 101. I was actually going to pickup a book on e-trading tonight hopefully.

I started investing through my company (UPS) a couple years back. I have seen great returns on it so far. I really think you should look for something solid, now is not the time to take risks. Wait until the market drops some more, then buy into the big corporations for cheap. When the market turns around, the bigger company's stocks will sky rocket.

Although, UPS stock has been rising steadily for years. It hit it's low a few years back down around 36$, since then, it has doubled.
