Im slightly interested in purchasing a 98+eclipse spyder gt-gts. what are the diferences in engines besides turbo? And are these engines chrysler engines? And are these cars worth modding? Sorry if Im asking stupid noobie questions. I just don't know anything about mitsu.

The engine in the Eclipse GS is just a regular Neon engine, the higher output 150hp version, and the GS-T is the turbo 7-Bolt 4G63....the spyder is a heavy car, and takes more mods to make it as fast as a comparably equipped coupe. Almost any car is worth modding, as the Neon engine in the non-turbo has a huge aftermarket following, companies like Hahn Racecraft make turbo kits for the car....the turbo version is easier to mod, since it already has the mitsubishi made 4G63 Turbo in it...the turbo is quite small, and there have been some problems with the 7-Bolt engine, but your always better off with a car that comes turbocharged from the factory.
These are not stupid questions, they seem to be honest and sincere, and I hope I was of some help...when you decide on a car, you let us know, and we'll see what we all can do for you.
Side note: There are now a few companies installing the PT Crusier and the Neon SRT-4 turbo engines into the non-turbo 2nd gen eclipses....just sounds kinda cool as it makes gobs of power, although im sure its very costly and for the same $$$ you can probably go much faster on the GS-T...

SRT engine in a 2g must be pretty nice... that engine make MAD power... and it'd be pretty cool to pop your hood and see that in there... very original

lol, yea, but im not sure what they do for turbo upgrades just yet, as the turbo and exhaust manifold are one piece, it makes it way more efficient, but much more difficult to modify.

so the eclipse gs and gst have different engines? or is one just turboed neon motor? Also what is the deal between chrysler and mitsu? If the noen has the same motor then why isn't a neon all the hype? Isn't it a bit lighter than an eclipse? I test drove a spyder gs and I was very dissapointed in it. It's gearbox felt smooth but had no power. And it wasn't very nimble around the corners. So I opt to test drive a turbo model. Discuss. :)

no the GST and GSX have the 4G63 turbo, while the GS and RS have the neon engine
The affiliation is DaimlerChrysler owns something like 40% of Bitsubishi.
