i would think headers and a nice catback would give you some decent gains, enough to drop you a couple tenths in the quarter, and the sound will be definately nicer.

What you want to replace is the stock H-pipe. Take that Piece of poop off of their and get something with High Flow Cats on it. Bassani, Dr. Gas, VRS, and BBK are some of the more popular brands to choose from. This will add more power than Headers or a Catback system.

Iwantspeed: Ok, here's what I'd do: Get a Steeda cat back exhaust and a Bassani off-road X-pipe. A set of long tube headers are expensive to start with, and the installation is very difficult and means you have to pull the engine. If you have the money pay someone to put on the headers if you buy them, the install will cost about $500-750. If you want some free horsepower, remove the intake silencer. To do this remove the filter box(on the passenger side at the front of the engine compartment) and pry the rubber silencer out, then replace the box. This is good for about 5hp at the ground. You can also bump up the timing with a Steeda timing adjuster. Install the adjuster and set it to about 14 or 15 degrees, you'll get more torque by doing this. Also getting a 80mm C&L mass air meter, and a 70mm throttle body will help your GT get moving down the track faster. If you ever get forced induction get a intake from a Bullitt Mustang(your Ford dealer can order one), you'll get about 30hp at the ground with a good supercharger. If you need anything else Private Message me.

Shortie headers do piss all for you. I am using SHM long tubes, a 3" off-road X, and magna flows on my 99GT. The long tubes made an insane amount of difference. You won't need a 3" exhaust for a mild car, but i'm planning on going all out (Cobra crank, manley rods, 10.5:1 or 11:1 compression, race ported SVO heads, a P&P'ed bullit intake, and maybe a noszle kit for the drag strip.
