I know very little about them, and I've never riden but I intend to buy one in the near future and wanted to get a little input first. I'm very new to the scene so please forgive my ignorance. I'm 16, 6'1", 165lbs. What's a quality, inexpensive, and flat-out fast bike? new or used. Is 125 too small for someone my size? How much should I expect to spend for the highest possible quality safety gear?

Dirt bikes are wikkid fun!!!!
For u a 125 would be a great start. Im not too clued up on smaller bikes but try find a four stroke.
Ok it will have less power than a 2 but it wont require a rebuild every few K's, which can be costly and irritating.
As for brands, most jap bikes are fine, obviously find a brand/model u like and do your homework so u dont get ne nasty surprises.
Enjoy

A 125 would be a great start , and you probably wont ever get bored with it. ANYONE can have fun on a 125cc dirtbike :) Eventually you're gonna end up gettin a 250cc , but theres no need for one yet. Like he said in the post above me , 2 strokes are kind of high maintnence but its not bad if you enjoy workin on the bike a little bit. You're gonna have to change the oil pretty often (i forgot how many hours) and the mix for the gas gets expensive. IMO its worth it , 2 strokes are way more fun than 4 strokes. http://www.thormx.com/ for gear . or search on the internet for motocross gear

My first bike to buy was a CR250. I still have it, but now it's got a lot more mods on it. It really depends on your ability to ride. If you question it, ride a friends 250 and make your mind up.

What are u intending to use this bike for? Racing, jumping, trailriding? Honda XR250 is a good first bike just for regular trail riding. Unless you are serious about competing and stuff, dont get a 2stroke(even though they are a helluva lota fun!) I have a 1986 honda 185XL dualsport bike. Its slow and break a lot (i tried to jump it).

I think the best bike for you would be a KTM 200MX they are great trail bikes and they aren't as peaky as a 125.If you get a 2 stroke the oil should be changed about every other ride or so depending on how lengthy the rides are.If you are able to work on bikes the top-end rebuilds take no longer than about 1 hour to do.

my first bike was a RM250D i still have it and ride it it is fun but it is a 2 stroke that the only bad thing about it caz they are a lot more pricy to keep going so try getting a 4 stroke. A 125 is ok for you and depends on if you get a racing one or a reg. a racing on is more expencive. but a reg. is slower :)

Why did you post if the original thread was 5 months ago?
