i chose 3s-gte because its lighter than a 2jz, and has heaps of potential. The JGTC supras have these engines instead of a worked 2jz because of this.

^ the h22 is not nearly one of the best engines...its a good one but it cant hold a candle to some that are on the list...

i would say the 2jz, 3s, or th r26 coz they have been tuned to over 1000hp and they have just amazing potential

see the US is confused. In japan the god of motors is the SR20. it is the most modded engine there is there. here we consider it a rarity. I think in overall preformace, modablitly, price and other contributing factors....SR20DET is my choice. Hemi is a 2nd or 3rd on my list too.

They are efficient when it comes to making power but they actually use more gas than our 4 stroke engines by design. 4 stroke engines only see fuel injected every 4 strokes of 1 cyclinder, while rotaries inject fuel 3 times every cycle of the rotor. However there is no design that makes more power for the volume.

you want power you use more gas PERIOD!

Going fast and saving money do not belong in teh same sentance.

Look at a V8. Fast as hell. Use a lot fo gas.

Look at a B16A or B18C5. Fast for what they are, but still in stock form get pissed on by V8's. Use little gas.

Mazda designed the rotary with going fast in mind. They dont care how much fuel they use.

If people cared aboitu fuel comsumption they would never buy a sports car or SUV.

I stopped carign and decided feelign and hearing VTEC was more humbling than keeping an extra $20 in my pocket.

The 2.9l VR6 should be on that list. It was an AMAZING feat when VW designed it. It may be old now, but to fit a 15degree V6 into an A2 with 174hp was a HUGE deal in the early 90's. How many of those ^ engines made it into Popular Mechanic? :)

see i think when jeff said that the SR20 was his choice it was cuz it was the best overall....preformance wise or most revelutionary maybe not. but overall its pretty good. i dunno I seem to agree

well because every time i get my new issue of scc it seems like there is always at least one skyline in there with upwards of 1000 hp. rb26 engines with insane amounts of hp are a dime a dozen... now i know i don't have a skyline and i can't bust out with all this smart technical crap about why the rb26dett is so good, but from what i read in articles on a regular basis, it's a great, bulletproof, engine that is capable of producing massive amounts of hp when tuned correctly. now of course the SR20 and the 2JZ GTE are also known for producing well over 1,000 hp too, but overall i think the rb26 is a great engine, and i don't know if it's the best because i have no experiece with pretty much any of those engines (like most of us here), but i think it's pretty damn good. :)

In fact most sr20dets are not built to be drag engines, they are built to be around 400hp+ for the drifters. I do know that URAS has tuned an 800hp+ SR20det but they crashed that not too long ago (silver s14), and as for signal, they have a few 9 second GTRs now on display at their main factory. last i heard they were making a drag civic

i think its a myth that the SR20det bottom end is indestructable, i have seen many many people blow up their silvias/180sx in the past few years, in fact from memory i think 600hp is about their limit

^ there's also that guy that lives somewhere in socal with a supra that has 900 whp, so i don't know what that is about at the crank, somewhere in the ballpark of 1,100 i would guess. he runs 9's on street tires with full interior! :o

i voted for the hemi, cause imo it is the best all motor engine, im a big fan of the nissan and supra engines (sr20det/2jz) but they get alot of there power from turbo's right? when im talking about best motors im thinking without help from turbos and supers.

one q..........why is the b18c5 in there but not the h22a? id much rather have a h22a then a b18c5.

i think the 3s-gte is superior to the sr20det in full out racing applications because the sr20 relies on rockers to actuate the valves, while the 3s relies on shim and bucket, helping high RPM operation. also witness that JGTC cars run not the 2jz, but the 3s

BMW got 192 out of a 2.3 in 1987 (88 in the USA) :P

Are you nuts? b18c5 is better. . .but I like the RB26DETT the best. Supra engines are cool, but I just like the RB26 better. The rotary is nice, but it likes to blow up too much. . .

Ive seen an RX7 with a RB26DETT motor swapped into it!! Now that can surely mean only one thing!! Unless they had the skyline motor just sat around in a workshop along with a RX7 wish a blown engine.

Also, TOP SECRET in Japan swapped out the motor from there supra in favour of the skyline motor when they had the big 1000hp figure in mind!!

It can only mean one thing, the RB26DETT RULES!!!!!!!

you speak the truth, just drop the compression ratio, although the hemispherical design of the pistons wouldn't really matter that much if you were planning on forced induction
but i'd much rather have a 454/496 stroked and turboed than a hemi 8)

this is how i see it...

to figure out what a better engine is you take one car...

for instance

lets take a 1970 plymouth cuda without a motor

now lets put a b18 in it and mod it to hell and see how it does
now that we're done with that, take that b18 out
lets put a 426 hemi in it and mod that to hell

understand what I'm saying now?

I completely agree w/you.
If you are talking about pure raw power to win a race, then yes of course bigger displacement usually=faster, of course there is no b-series that could take a top fuel dragster.
i like to think of the best engine as the most EFFICIENT and with newer technology. the hemi seems to be a favorite for their hemispherical pistons, but there are other engines that brough new technology to the world of cars that is used by others. The newest EVO's engine seems to be pretty efficient for such small displacement, is this the result of a redesigned 4G63 platform or just a better suited snail.
anyways my vote goes for the RB26DETT

I guess people who talk about Top Secret of Japan in regards to them swapping an RB26dett in place of the 2jz-gte dont realize that Top Secret's Mr. Nagata prefers GTRs in general. The Top secret Supra is only making 750hp @ the crank, a 2jz-gte can do that easily so that car is nothing more then a "Hey look what we can do" tuners car.

The RB26dett revs higher, but the 2jz-gte produces more torque (3.0L vs 2.6L), and handles more power with stock internals. It's more a matter of what you prefer when it comes to those two motors. Here's food for thought though, there are four Imports running 200+mph in the 1/4th, 3 of them use the 2jz-gte (the other is a V8). There was a post on Supraforums.com a few weeks ago about a 1600hp 2jz-gte, thats the most I've ever heard from either motor. But then again, Mario from Exvitermini.com is probably pushing close to that much too. Highly modded RB26s have a problem with heat dissipation which ends up causing a shitload of stress fractures and eventually the head cracking. 2jz-gte's oddly enough have caught a wrap for developing crankwalk lately, and they have a narrow powerband (4000rpm-7000rpm 2jz-gte vs 5000rpm to 10,000rpm RB26dett). The perfect motor to me would be the 2jz-gte's ability to handle a shitload of power with the Rb26's ability to scream to 12,000rpm.

There are no 1000hp SR20DET's that I know of, the most I've heard of is from the JUN Silvia drag car which is pushing 800hp.
