I recommend if you want light tones you desaturate and then adjust the brightness, but be careful...too much lightening will take away some of the definition and fine lines. If you wanna go for a deep deep tone, like black or navy, then darken it a little bit (or a lot if you want black) after desaturating and before you adjust color balance. Also, here's how I found to be the best way to make your own carbon fiber hood. Select the hood area, then go IMAGE>ADJUSTMENTS>GRADIENT MAP and keep it at the default (white fades to black) and just click on the box that says "reverse" and your hood (which should be a light tone, works best if you desaturate and make it near white) will become black with white highlights, which will give the appearance of carbon fiber because of the pixels in the picture. My blue civic was a hood that was cut and pasted, the hood on the Del Sol was done using the method I just described. Enjoy!
